Nobel Prize Coincidences

At a time when Barack Obama is announced as the recipient of this year's Nobel Peace Prize, I noticed that no fewer than five Nobel Laureates were born on this day in history! They are: Norwegian explorer Fridjtoft Nansen born 1861, Nobel Peace Prize 1922; French writer Claude Simon born 1913, Nobel Prize for Literature 1985; French chemist Yves Chauvin born 1930, Nobel prize for Chemistry 2005; English playwright Harold Pinter born 1930, Nobel Prize for Literature 2005; German physicist Gerhard Ertl born 1935, Nobel Prize for Chemistry 2007.

Your Saturday questions are: -

  2. Sir Matthew Pinsent (right) was born today in 1970 and has won four Olympic and ten World Championship gold medals at which sport?

  3. Which island nation in the Pacific Ocean gained independence from the United Kingdom, also today in 1970?
