Bad Day to Fly?

Searching for questions, and again I've unearthed an interesting and worrying coincidence. Within the space of just seven years there were five fatal plane crashes on 31st October! In 1994 American Eagle Flight 4184 crashed killing 68 people; in 1996 TAM Flight 402 crashed killing 99 people; in 1999 EgyptAir Flight 990 crashed into the Atlantic Ocean killing 217 people; in 2000 Singapore Airlines Flight 006 collided with construction equipment on take-off from Taipei killing 83 people and in Angola a chartered Antonov AN-26 crashed twenty minutes after take-off (possibly downed by UNITA terrorists) killing 48 people. Hopefully the unlucky run of plane crashes on this day is over now!

Scientists have reported that an extract found in turmeric can kill off cancer cells. The chemical, curcumin, is also being tested as a treatment for arthritis and dementia! Farmer's Disbelief over Saxon Hoard

A few weeks ago the news that a hoard of Saxon Gold had been found on a Staffordshire farm was everywhere. After being displayed in Birmingham the treasure is now being valued at the British Museum, but both the archaeologist and the farmer will be well rewarded. The farmer, Fred Johnson has given his first interview about the find and the thing that struck me most was that he's worried that the money, estimated to be at least £½ million, will affect him negatively! Now that's a worry I'd like to have!

BlogDumps Top Sites Tuesday #31

This week's theme is - Two Things on Tuesday! I was struggling to think of anything (again) until I came across this article. Birmingham and Fine Dining are two things that many people wouldn't associate with one another, but it would appear that Birmingham has three Michelin starred restaurants (that's more than Liverpool, Manchester and Leeds combined!) The latest addition is Purnell's, but I don't think I'll be eating there anytime soon...unless I win the lottery! No, I'll be sticking to the best culinary invention to come out of Birmingham - the Balti. An affordable and enjoyable way to enjoy Indian cuisine!

Summer Time is Over

Today is the first day of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) as the clocks went back by one hour at 2:00 am. In the UK it is the end of British Summer Time (BST) and in the rest of Europe it is the end of European Summer Time. It's not so many years ago that this change was on different days for different parts of Europe, but now, by and large, the change is synchronised! However, in the USA the clocks 'go back' next Sunday! The good thing, for me, is that I get an extra hour in bed!!

UK Recession Worst Since Records Began

It's official, this is the longest recession since records began in 1955! This is the sixth consecutive quarter that Gross Domestic Product (GDP) has fallen. Everyone is saying that next quarter will be better, but these are the same people that were expecting the latest results to be positive! Oh well, it looks like I'll still be struggling to find gainful employment for some time to come! Still, best to look on the bright side - we could all be 'doomed' if Dalton Chiscolm wins his claim against Bank of America for $1784 trillion billion (that's $1,784,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 or, in layman's terms, 'slightly' more money than there is in the world!). I'm composing my begging letter now!

UK Population to Rise by 10 Million

The Office for National Statistics has predicted that by 2033 the population of the UK will have risen from 61 to 71.3 million if current trends continue. Two thirds of this increase will come from migration. There is a lot of information in this article, but it will help fuel the British National Party (BNP) because it looks as though the government can't control immigration. I'm no supporter of the BNP, but this island cannot possibly cope with mass immigration as there just isn't room nor the infrastructure to cope!

Jenson Button Formula 1 World Champion

For the first time ever one Englishman has replaced another as Formula 1 World Champion driver when Jenson Button finished fifth in the Brazilian Grand Prix at Interlagos, ahead of his nearest rivals Rubens Barrichello and Sebastian Vettel. This championship is all the more remarkable as Button's team, Brawn GP, almost didn't exist after Honda pulled out of Formula 1 after the 2008 season! How My Car Keeps Running

Following on from yesterday's post, I found this article on the BBC's West Midlands page! I currently have a Rover 75 which I bought less than a year ago (on eBay!) and I'd always assumed that parts would be available for quite some time to come. Well, that's true, but I'd not realised how much effort has gone into ensuring this is the case! Some of the tooling and machinery has been shipped to China as everything at MG Rover was bought by Chinese car maker Nanjing. Thankfully, all seems to be well!

BlogDumps Top Sites Tuesday #29

"What was your first or favourite car?" is this week's theme. My first car was a Burgundy Red 1.3 litre Morris Marina! It was a good runner, but had poor suspension. But as my first car it was great and never really let me down. I had to sell it when there was too much rust and traded up to a Metro! Then I got a Ford Escort Mark III, which I only had for a few months before I moved to Australia. In Melbourne I drove a Holden Gemini RB which was a great little car. On my return to Birmingham I bought another Escort. After 8 happy years I bought a Rover 416 Mark II which lasted for 9 years before I got a company car - a VW Passat. This lasted 3 months before I was made redundant! Now I drive a Rover 75. I hadn't really thought about it till now, but I've been back from Australia for 18 years now and I'm only on my fourth car; two of those have been in the last 12 months!!.

Edgar Allan Poe Funeral Service

After 160 years, Edgar Allan Poe has been honoured with a decent funeral service in Baltimore. When he died in 1849 he was an impoverished lunatic and almost no-one showed up for his funeral service! EDF World Half Marathon - Birmingham

On Sunday the EDF World Half Marathon Championship is taking place in Birmingham, which is great news for the city. However, there's a slight problem for me - I live inside the circuit, so for several hours on Sunday I'll be a 'prisoner' in my own neighbourhood! Actually it's not such a problem as I've no plans for going anywhere on Sunday. I called the hotline to find out what arrangements had been made if I needed to use my car, but we've only just had the details through out letterboxes today! As long as I remember to get all my food before the day I should be alright (I can still go to the local Co-op as well!)

Saturn and Venus in the News!

Today you get two stories for the price of one! Firstly, the Russians are planning a mission to Venus for the first time in almost 30 years! Secondly, another ring has been discovered around Saturn that is 50 times further from the planet than the other rings (and in a different plane). What effect these items will have on us here on Earth is probably negligible, but I find it fascinating!

Shroud of Turin Reproduced

An Italian scientist has reproduced the Turin Shroud using methods available in the Middle Ages. The Shroud was carbon dated and found to originate from about 1325, but many people still believe that it is an actual image of Christ. This new exercise is unlikely to sway the believers, but it does show just how it could have been faked, which is good enough for me!!

Tracey Emin to Quit UK Over Tax?

I've been a fan of Tracey Emin (mainly for her attitude as I'm not an arty type normally), but I can't agree with her view that she will soon be overtaxed. If she earns over £150,000 per year then her taxes should go up to help pay for those of us who are less well off. (Imagine the tax bills of footballers who get £150,000 PER WEEK.) She reckons that about 65% of what she earns will go to the government...well I think that's fine; I know I'd like to earn enough to be paying that rate of tax!

Air Traffic Control Problems

There was widespread disruption of transatlantic flights when a computer problem at Prestwick grounded all flights from the UK. This just goes to show that, when we fly, our safety is in the 'hands' of a sophisticated piece of modern technology and we can only hope that it hasn't been hacked into by terrorists, or just failed and crashes us into the ground!

One Legged Golfer at Dunhill Links Championship

Manuel de los Santos is 25, from the Dominican Republic and is currently taking part in the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in Scotland off a handicap of 3. So far not so remarkable, except that he lost a leg in a car crash in France and now plays golf without the use of an artificial limb! Shelfari - Virtual Book Cases for All

I'm not sure how I came across this, but Shelfari is a great site that allows you to display your favourite books and discuss them with other members of the site. I've put my 'bookshelf' on the blog so that you can see some of my favourite titles. I've always been a fan of bookcases as they are much more interesting then mere wallpaper in a room (same goes for pictures on the walls!)!
