Professor Stephen Hawking advises us, in a new TV series from the Discovery Channel, not to look for intelligent alien life elsewhere in the universe as they might just raid us for our resources! He quotes how the invasion of Europeans devastated the indigenous population of North America as an example of what an alien encounter might do to us! I'm not sure if he is right about that. My view is that for any species to develop practical travel between stars, they would have to have complete co-operation from their whole species because it is so difficult to do. This would mean that they would be entirely peaceful as they would have had to abolish war as part of their 'super' co-operation! Mankind is a long, long way from achieving such a level of co-operation...but when we do...we'll then be in a position to explore the Universe!
