The world's first solar powered aeroplane has taken to the air for the first time at Dübendorf in Switzerland. It flew for 30 seconds at the dizzy height of a metre and covered a distance of 350 metres! This is not dissimilar to the first flight by the Wright Brothers and could possibly lead to a whole new way of powering aircraft! The next flight will be in the New Year with a transatlantic flight planned for 2012. If all goes well Solar Impulse will then make a circumnavigation of the globe at some time in the future!
