This is very bad news - the English pub is one of our great cultural icons and should be preserved at all costs. With the recession following on so closely behind the smoking ban, pubs that haven't diversified into food are struggling to make ends meet. This means that many traditional village pubs and back street boozers cannot continue. This has resulted in a loss of about 24,000 jobs so far - imagine the reaction if a major manufacturer or financial institution closed with such a loss of jobs; but as it has been a trickle (now a torrent) there has been no government intervention!
Thursday's questions are: -
- King Farouk was overthrown in a military coup in which African country today in 1952?
- What is the real name of former Guns N' Roses guitarist Slash (right) who was born today in 1965 in England?
- Which couple married at Westminster Abbey today in 1986?
