Who'd have thought that Kevin Costner would be the owner of equipment that could help reduce the impact of the massive oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico! In 1995 Kevin Costner bought Ocean Therapy Solutions which specialises in centrifugal oil-water separating machines. Until recently there was little interest in this technology until BP trialled a few of these machines and they have now ordered 32 of them. Each machine can process 210,000 gallons per day achieving 99% separation without the use of chemical or biological agents. This sounds like fantastic technology and let's hope it can have a very positive influence!
One thing that I can't seem to find is this - he bought the company in 1995; the same year that the infamous "Waterworld" was released in cinemas. Was this a coincidence or did Kevin Costner realise that our oceans were a fragile environment following his experiences making the film?

I have heard about this, in fact I watched how it works and it is fabulous. The only problem is how do they clean up the deep water currents? Thanks for letting me know who owns this wonderful company. It is really nice to know that he does things like this.

It gives an idea of the scale of the problem to realize that there are 650,000,000,000,000,000 gallons of water in the Gulf, so it would take 32 machines 300 million years to "clean the gulf." Of course, I know they'll be used locally in critical areas.

What an awesome idea! I really love the idea of being able to clean up this mess with out the use of chemicals, but I do realize that 32 is a drop in the hat of this clean-up effort.
