John Smeaton - Father of Civil Engineering

It is Top Sites Tuesday at Blogdumps and this week I'm sticking to one thought - about a man many people won't have heard much of! Last week we journeyed along one of his constructions - the Birmingham and Fazeley Canal - and I notice that John Smeaton was born today in 1724. He is best known for the third Eddystone Lighthouse which lasted over 100 years before the rock beneath it crumbled. (It was dismantled and rebuilt and still stands at Plymouth Hoe.) He also coined the term 'Civil Engineer' (as opposed to 'Military Engineer'). He is considered to be the first expert witness in an English court case (1782). And finally...the lift equation used by the Wright Brothers used the Smeaton coefficient! A few highlights in the remarkable career of a truly remarkable man!

Your Tuesday questions are:-
  1. In which city did the Prophet Muhammad die today in 632?

  2. At which airport was James Earl Ray (right), assassin of Martin Luther King Jr., apprehended today in 1968?

  3. Who was born today in 1951 and was the first Welsh singer to have a solo Number One single in the USA?
Yesterday's Answers: 1. Iraq; 2. Chief Scout; 3. Tom Jones

My book "The Easy Quiz Master"
is available NOW from Amazon and Lulu.

Wow! That's interesting trivia about John Smeaton. Actually, I have heard his name before...probably because I have a couple of uncles who are civil engineers.

Thanks for the trivia bit Pete! He sounds like an amazing guy that we should all be taught a little more about in school.
