Harryhausen Donates Models to Bradford Museum

Special effects creator Ray Harryhausen is offering his life's work to the National Media Museum. Harryhausen, 90 yesterday, was behind dozens of stop-motion creatures which featured in films such as the original "Clash Of The Titans" and "Jason And The Argonauts". The museum, in Bradford, will be able to display the collection if it can raise the funds to preserve it!

Fake Charity Collection Scam

I am constantly amazed at the depths some people will descend to in order to make money! Established in 1988, Acorns Children's Hospice Trust is a registered charity offering a network of care for over 500 life limited and life threatened children and young people and providing support for their families across the heart of England. These children and young people are not expected to reach adulthood and require specialist care 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Acorns is the only organisation that provides this level of care to these vulnerable youngsters whilst offering a range of support services to the whole family to help them cope at every stage of their child's life and beyond into bereavement. One of their means of income is via collection of unwanted clothing. Some despicable scam artists have made very similar looking plastic bags and are collecting the clothes that people had intended to go to Acorns! I hope that they catch the responsible people and lock them up for a long time!

World Cup is Over (For England!!)

England's overpaid, underachieving, prima donna footballers finally got what has been coming for many years! This was dubbed 'England's Golden Generation', but again they failed to actually be able to play football. In 2006, it was apparently the fault of the 'WAGs' and the attendant hoopla as to why England failed to play well! In 2008 England failed to reach the finals stage of the European Championship and this year, under the stricter regime of Fabio Capello, England still failed abysmally! Kevin Keegan resigned as manager in 2000 because he felt he wasn't good enough to manage at that level after a home defeat to Germany. There followed Sven Goran Eriksson, Steve McClaren and now Fabio Capello...and England still cannot play football of even close to the required standard! It can't be the fault of the coaches, which leaves us with only one conclusion - THE ENGLAND PLAYERS ARE JUST NOT GOOD ENOUGH!

"Stop War Start Tennis"

Sport again leads the way in promoting peace and understanding! As Indian and Pakistani diplomats meet in Islamabad to bridge the gulf of mistrust between them, two tennis players are doing exactly that. Wimbledon Poet in Residence

This year sees the first ever poet-in-residence at the Wimbledon Tennis Tournament. Matt Harvey is the lucky man after an idea from the Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Museum and the role was created by the Poetry Trust. Michael Jackson - One Year On

It's still hard to believe that Michael Jackson is really dead and that it is now 12 months since it happened. In that time his estate has made $1 billion in royalties! His sister La Toya is still claiming that he was murdered "because he is worth more dead than he was alive"! That is a very salient point and is very hard to argue against! His brother Jermaine thinks he should have embraced Islam and that might have saved him. He's also mystified why in death people love Michael but was viewed as something of a joke when he was alive. Sadly, that's human nature, to remember the great songs and music, but to forget the darker, creepier side of him! I've always enjoyed the songs!

Longest Match in Grand Slam History

When Nicolas Mahut and John Isner resumed their first round match on Wimbledon's Court 18 yesterday no-one could have foreseen that it would become a record breaking match! The final set was still level at 59 games each when play was suspended because of bad light! This is the longest match in terms of time and number of games played. This is only possible now at Wimbledon as there is no tiebreaker in the fifth set (for men) or third set (for women)! With an overnight rest, this final set could go on for several more hours yet!

The game finally finished with John Isner winning the final set 70 - 68!

Kevin Costner to Help Clear Up Gulf Oil Spill

Who'd have thought that Kevin Costner would be the owner of equipment that could help reduce the impact of the massive oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico! In 1995 Kevin Costner bought Ocean Therapy Solutions which specialises in centrifugal oil-water separating machines. Until recently there was little interest in this technology until BP trialled a few of these machines and they have now ordered 32 of them. Each machine can process 210,000 gallons per day achieving 99% separation without the use of chemical or biological agents. This sounds like fantastic technology and let's hope it can have a very positive influence!

One thing that I can't seem to find is this - he bought the company in 1995; the same year that the infamous "Waterworld" was released in cinemas. Was this a coincidence or did Kevin Costner realise that our oceans were a fragile environment following his experiences making the film?

England's Football Woes!

Dear, oh, dear! England's World Cup hopes hang by a thread and everyone seems surprised! I predicted that it wouldn't be so easy to qualify from our group in my blog when the draw was made! Anyway, a win against Slovenia on Wednesday and England win the group! What the pundits fail to remember that in 1986 England had only one point at this stage and went on to be beaten only by Diego Maradona's 'Hand of God' goal in the quarter-final! Then in 1990, the situation was exactly the same as now and England reached the semi-finals and the infamous penalty shoot out defeat to West Germany! So all is not lost...yet!

Ancient Climate Change "Linked" to CO2

New research may have found a pattern of climate change going back 2.7 million years, linked to Carbon Dioxide in the atmosphere! This backs up what I believe to be happening now, namely that the current warming of our climate is natural and has happened before. I also believe that there will quickly follow an ice age after this period of warming. It has happened before and will happen again! The human race should be planning how to survive this forthcoming change, not wasting time and effort on trying to stop a process that is far bigger than we are!

Drink Drive Limits Under Scrutiny

This is a thorny topic and there is no absolute answer to it. A zero limit (0 mg) is, I believe unworkable, because after a night out how can you tell when your alcohol level has fallen to zero the next day? Studies have shown that dropping the level to 50 mg (from the current 80 mg) is beneficial in cutting the number of deaths and injuries! But...there is one thing that hasn't been allowed in Britain - Random Breath Testing (RBT)! OK, you could say that we have de facto RBT, but if it was fully implemented all year round, then the drink drive numbers would drop, as there's a much greater chance of getting caught!

Certain Wikipedia articles that had been subjected to 'constant', often malicious, changes have now been opened up to allow editing, but will only be published after review by Senior Editors. The profile of ex US President George W Bush was one such profile. As a regular user of Wikipedia I welcome these changes as it means that the site will become an even more reliable source of data...and this is where most of my information comes from!!

Green Revolution

It would seem that the scientists who managed to greatly increase the yield of crops from the same area are responsible for reducing the quantity of greenhouse gases generated. This is one of the greatest human achievements and no one has identified the heroes responsible for feeding so many more people than would have been possible in the past 150 years! Let's hope that scientists can carry on their excellent work in feeding the human race!

Asteroid Sampling Mission Returns Home

A Japanese mission (codenamed Hayabusa) to collect samples from the Itokawa asteroid has finally returned to Earth after a three year delay caused by technical problems! It is remarkable that the capsule has returned following a catalogue of technical problems and it isn't clear yet whether any samples of the asteroid were actually collected as the collector failed at the moment of collection! Hopefully, there will be enough material for analysis to help us to better understand our Solar System!

Calypso to be Relaunched

Pregnant or Fat??

Apparently, some people are afraid to stand up for a pregnant woman on trains and buses for fear of getting it wrong and finding that the woman is merely fat and not pregnant! John Smeaton - Father of Civil Engineering

It is Top Sites Tuesday at Blogdumps and this week I'm sticking to one thought - about a man many people won't have heard much of! Last week we journeyed along one of his constructions - the Birmingham and Fazeley Canal - and I notice that John Smeaton was born today in 1724. He is best known for the third Eddystone Lighthouse which lasted over 100 years before the rock beneath it crumbled. (It was dismantled and rebuilt and still stands at Plymouth Hoe.) He also coined the term 'Civil Engineer' (as opposed to 'Military Engineer'). He is considered to be the first expert witness in an English court case (1782). And finally...the lift equation used by the Wright Brothers used the Smeaton coefficient! A few highlights in the remarkable career of a truly remarkable man!

World Cup Ball Criticism

Every four years there's a new ball for the FIFA World Cup Finals tournament...and every four years the players (especially the goalkeepers) complain about it! This time the ball is completely synthetic, there is no stitching which could let in water and it is the most spherical ball yet designed (and the players have been complaining!!). This should be the most consistent ball yet and is designed to benefit the most skillful players. Well, in less than a week's time we will see how the Jabulani ball performs!

Reflections on the Waterways!

I've been back home and still got a lot of catching up to do! Had a great trip away which saw us visit seven new pubs (if you include the Hilton Hotel at Wolverhampton Racecourse!), there were lock stoppages through lack of water (vandalism), one day of rain, loads of sunshine, another meeting with historic narrowboat President and a failure of our throttle cable when only four locks from home (fortunately)! So, all-in-all an enjoyable trip around the Midlands!
